View on Google Maps >

Shimokiya-machi is a place to enjoy streetscapes that tell of history and the way each season is woven by nature.
Within walking distance are such noted places as Yasaka Shrine, Kennin-ji temple, Gion, and Ponto-cho.

  • Kiyomizu-dera Temple

A popular spot perfect for a longer stroll from the hotel. The Kiyomizu veranda, the most famous part of the temple, offers one of the best views in Kyoto, providing a panorama over to Kyoto Tower and the rest of the city. (Walk / Approx. 30 mins)

  • Fushimi-Inari Taisha Shrine

With more than 13 centuries of history, this is the head shrine of all the thousands of Inari shrines around Japan. The famous avenues of torii gateways are popular with overseas visitors as well. They make a stunning sight, one you’ll be unable to resist photographing. (Walk + Train / Approx. 20 mins)

  • Yasui Konpira-gu Shrine

Worshipped by people as a way to rid themselves of all evil relationships, such as between men and women, with illness, drink, smoking, and gambling, and forge good ones. Couples joined in good relationships will have their relationship strengthened, made deeper. (Walk / Approx. 15 mins)

  • Nishiki Market

With a history dating back more that 400 years, Nishiki Market has been called “Kyoto’s Kitchen.” The arcade, stretching for nearly 390 meters, is a place to enjoy Kyoto’s unique ingredients and cuisine. (Walk / Approx. 12 mins)

  • Takase River

The Takase River flows alongside Kiyamachi-dori street, rich with Kyoto’s atmosphere. The river is actually a canal dug in the early Edo period to haul cargo. It is also famed for its cherry blossoms. (Behind the hotel)

  • The Philosopher’s Walk

A walking path about 2 km long between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji temples. The perfect place to reflect on Kyoto’s history as you enjoy the landscapes that change from season to season, with cherry blossoms giving way to fresh leaves, then autumn reds and golds. (Walk + Train / Approx. 30 mins)

  • Kifune Shrine

A popular historical shrine known as a “power spot” for relationships, it enshrines the deity of water. The view of the “kawadoko” platforms lined up over the Kifune River are one of the poetic landscapes of Kyoto. (Walk + Train + Bus / Approx. 70 mins)

  • Sanjusangen-do Temple

The name “Sanjusangen-do” or “Temple of 33 Bays” comes from the fact that there are 33 bays or spaces between the pillars along the temple facade. The temple houses 1,001 statues of Buddha. (Walk + Bus / Approx. 20 mins)

  • Yasaka Pagoda

This five-level pagoda, towering over its surroundings, is nicknamed the Yasaka Pagoda, and is a local landmark. It is also the perfect place to get a photo that captures the essence of Kyoto. (Walk / Approx. 15 mins)

  • Stepping Stones in the Kamo River Delta

The Kamo River Delta spit, where the Kamo and Takano rivers meet, has stepping stones popular with families and couples. Some of the stones look like animals. (Walk + Bus / Approx. 20 mins)
